FINDING THE FUNNY BONE
There’s a classic joke that goes, “Hey Doc, it hurts when I do this.” To which the doctor replies, “Well, don’t do that.” When it comes to humor and healthcare, that old chestnut is about the extent of it. Or is it? Well, that depends. At its core, humor is simply a human truth revealed in an unexpected way. We laugh because we can relate. Now, you have to pick your spots carefully, but getting your audience to chuckle, nod and lean forward… well, that’s a great first step in effective communication. Because both Urgent Care and OnDemand telehealth services are non-life and death service lines, I levereaged humor in ways the ProMedica target audience could relate to. The Urgent Care campaign delves into the real, featuring scenarios most of us have experienced. The OnDemand campaign, on the other hand, embraces the surreal, with a cheeky spokesman popping up in unusual places. Both effective, but each campaign leveraging humor in the way that suits it best.
